Modern American thrift stores developed largely from charitable resale programs around the turn of the 20th century. The Salvation Army was operating organized salvage programs by the late 1890s, while Goodwill began in Boston in 1902 when donated goods were collected, repaired and resold as part of an employment-based charitable model. By the 1920s, thrift shops were increasingly being arranged and operated much like conventional retail stores.

That combination of reuse + value + community purpose is especially visible in Jefferson City.

Dreams to Reality at 500 Jefferson Street gives secondhand shopping an especially meaningful connection to the community.

Its resale boutique offers clothing including dresses, jackets, pants, tops, accessories and formal wear. Revenue from boutique sales helps the organization obtain items needed to support women preparing for interviews, employment and workplace opportunities.

So an afternoon of resale shopping can directly support another person's next professional chapter.

🏠 River City Habitat for Humanity ReStore

DIY people, remodelers and home-project treasure hunters get their own version of thrifting at the River City Habitat ReStore, located at 1420 Creek Trail Drive.

Habitat ReStores sell donated new and gently used furniture, appliances, home accessories, building materials and other home-improvement items. Proceeds support Habitat for Humanity's housing mission.

For homeowners especially, it's one of those places where you may walk in looking for one thing and suddenly start planning an entirely different project.
