Treasure Hunting at the Lake: 3 Thrift Shops to Explore at Lake of the Ozarks

There’s something especially fun about walking into a thrift shop without knowing exactly what you’re looking for. Maybe you leave with a vintage lamp. Maybe it’s lake décor, a stack of books, furniture for the condo or something you absolutely did not need—but couldn’t leave behind.

In honor of National Thrift Shop Day, we’re taking a little treasure hunt around Lake of the Ozarks and highlighting three area thrift stores worth knowing.

How Did Thrift Shopping Become a Thing?

Buying secondhand certainly isn’t new, but the American thrift-store model began taking recognizable shape in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

The Salvation Army began organized salvage efforts in the U.S. in the late 1890s, collecting discarded materials while providing work and assistance to people in need. In 1902, Goodwill founder Edgar J. Helms developed a similar model in Boston: donated household goods were collected, repaired and sold, with the proceeds helping provide employment. Over time, charitable resale shops evolved into the organized thrift-store experience we recognize today.

At Lake of the Ozarks, that community-minded tradition is still easy to see. Several local thrift shops use the proceeds from what they sell to support people—or pets—right here in the area.

🛍️ Hope House Thrift Store — Lake Ozark

Hope House operates its thrift store at 40 Lakeland Road in Lake Ozark, with donated clothing, furniture, household goods, books, décor and other finds making their way onto the sales floor. More importantly, thrift-store proceeds are a major funding source for Hope House's food pantry and community assistance programs.

That means the lamp, table or quirky piece of décor you bring home can do a little good in the community at the same time.

🐾 Ozarks Kat & K9 Thrift Store — Sunrise Beach

If you like your treasure hunting with a side of animal rescue, put this one on the list.

The Ozarks Kat & K9 Thrift Store, located at 17282 Missouri Highway 5 North in Sunrise Beach, carries donated clothing, furniture, household goods, seasonal lake items, toys and more. Proceeds from the store help support Ozarks Kat & K9's nonprofit no-kill animal shelter and the dogs and cats in its care.

Inventory changes constantly—which is half the fun of thrifting anyway.

🌿 Share the Harvest Food Pantry & Thrift Store — Camdenton Area

Share the Harvest combines its thrift store and food-pantry mission under one roof near Camdenton at 689 N. State Highway 7. The thrift store carries clothing, household goods, seasonal merchandise, knickknacks and other donated items, with sales revenue helping support the organization's ongoing food-pantry work.

It is another good example of why shopping secondhand locally can have an impact well beyond finding a bargain.
